Welcome to Painswick Music Society

Every year we organise a season of high-quality classical concerts in the lovely setting and fine acoustics of St Mary’s Church, Painswick, Gloucestershire. Our first concert was on 30th March 1946. We’ve been putting on great concerts on Saturday afternoons in springtime ever since! Many hundreds of famous musicians and singers have performed in Painswick. During the earliest decades they included Pauline Juler (clarinet), William Pleeth (cello), Dennis Brain (French horn), Allegri String Quartet and Dame Janet Baker (contralto). More recently we have welcomed Emma Johnson (clarinet), Stephen Isserlis (cello), Dame Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano), Angela Hewitt (piano), The Carducci String Quartet, Catrin Finch (harp), Jess Gillam (saxophone)…and many, many more!

If you would like more information about the Painswick Music Society, read more about us and our history.

2026 is our 80th Anniversary Season

We look forward to welcoming you for another four great concerts in 2026 – our 80th Anniversary Season. Individual tickets will be available in early January, with the option to purchase a Season Ticket (Membership) for all four concerts at a discounted price.

A History of Painswick Music Society by Martin Woodhead

“A History of  Painswick Music Society” is a celebration of this 80th Anniversary Season. The book explores how the charity got started in 1946, the people involved, the challenges they faced, as well as their achievements, notably attracting 100s of famous musicians and singers. The book also includes a catalogue detailing every concert across 80 Seasons.

Copies are available at all this year’s concerts, no charge, but please make a donation to support the charity – in cash, by card or via the ‘Support’ page on this website. If you would like a copy sent to you, please email info@painswickmusicsoc.co.uk.
