Message From the Chairman
We have another wonderful season to look forward to in 2018 and are particularly delighted to be welcoming back Dame Sarah Connolly accompanied by Joseph Middleton. Many will remember her spellbinding recital at St Mary’s in 2015. This one promises to be equally memorable as it includes the first performance of a Song Cycle by the leading British composer Sally Beamish, set to poetry by Laurie Lee, which we have been able to commission through a most generous bequest. Dame Sarah’s programme also includes other English composers.
We also welcome the Schubert Ensemble, returning to St Mary’s in their final celebratory season. Their programme also features a new work: a Piano Quintet by Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, premiered by the Ensemble three days earlier at the Wigmore Hall. Our other celebrated performers are the great cellist Raphael Wallfisch, accompanied by John York and the charismatic Heath Quartet, coming to Painswick for the first time. The Heaths are playing the Fifth Quartet of the celebrated young German composer, Jörg Widmann.
Attendances at all four concerts in our 2017 season were at record levels and we were pleased to see some younger faces in our audiences. Please encourage any young family members or friends to come along, so that we can continue to build our audience for the future.
Painswick Music Society is run by volunteers and we are always keen to hear from anyone interested in joining the committee. We are currently looking for a new treasurer who could take over at our AGM in October 2018. Please let me know if you are interested, and I can give you a job description. We look forward to welcoming you to our 2018 concerts.
